He is also, in his small amount of spare time, one of the judges – alongside the acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia and the journalist/author Terri White – for a film competition that’s the result of a collaboration between the British Film Institute and BMW. His choice of roles has been true to that inherent degree of diversity: there was Eric, the glorious gay schoolboy in Netflix series Sex Education a fighter pilot in the as yet unreleased Second World War miniseries Masters of the Air Ken (one of them) in Barbie and at the end of the year he will debut as the Doctor. Gatwa is a Rwandan Scotsman – his family moved to Edinburgh in 1994, when Ncuti was two – and you can hear traces of east African and Scottish in his accent.
